The unique location of the city situated by the Oslo fjord as well as the exceptional combination of untouched nature and pulsating city life gives Oslo a special flair. Half of the urban area of Oslo is covered with forest and you can find countless lakes and many small islands. The former Old Town in the Gamlebyen district is worth seeing with the exposed foundation walls of medieval Oslo.
An absolute must for every visitor is a tour of the historical Akershus Fortress, a Renaissance castle and former royal residence on the Akersnes peninsula.
Places to visit along the popular shopping mile Karl Johan gate and that are within walking distance in the city center are such as the Storting (the Norwegian Parliament), the Royal Castle and also the Town Hall, where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually, the Oslo Cathedral and the National Theater. The museums of the city also exhibit several sights: the Fram-Museum, the National Gallery or the Munch-Museum. The historical facades of the former shipyard district Aker Brygge offer an atmospheric setting for city life: this is where the heart of the new Oslo beats with numerous shops, restaurants and cafes. But also those who are seeking rest and relaxation will find what they are looking for amongst untouched nature that can be found not far away from the city center.
Enjoy a unique panorama view of the city and the Oslo Fjord from the Holmenkol Mountain (Holmenkollen) which is world-famous for its ski jump.
